Heavenly Father

Make me better parent

Teach me to understand my children,

To listen patently to what they have to say,

And to answer all their question kindly.

Keep me from interrupting them ,

or contradicting them.

Make me as courteous to them

As I would have them be to me.

Forbid that I should ever laugh at their mistakes,

Or resort to shame or ridicule

if they displease me.

Bless me with the bigness to grant them

all their reasonable request,

And the courage to deny them privileges

That I know will do them harm.

Make me fair and just and kind.

And fit me, O lord,

To be loved and respected

and imitated by my children.

"If I had my child to raise all over again"

If I had my child to raise all over again,
I'd build self-esteem first, and the house later.
I'd finger-paint more, and point the finger less.
I would do less correcting and more connecting.
I'd take my eyes off my watch, and watch with my eyes.
I'd take more hikes and fly more kites.
I'd stop playing serious, and seriously play.
I would run through more fields and gaze at more stars.
I'd do more hugging and less tugging.
